Can anyone tell me what kind of outfit she is wearing

Thank you, we thought that maybe it could be with the church but have not found anything further on her.  Since she was in England is it possible her name would have been changed like that in the USA.  I am not Catholic but here the Nuns change their complete name.  I hate sounding stupid but need to find answers.

At first glance novice Nun came to mind when I saw the outfit.

A member on  one of my trees, became a Nun, born about 1920's and had her named changed completely, never knew this until I obtained her parents death notices.  It was just a matter of keeping my eye open when scanning the death notices in our paper about 15 years ago for her demise.

Wasn't until I started doing genealogy, and searching the Electoral Rolls that I found that one of her siblings used to five doors away from us when I was growing up

I have searched and searched but can not find her in the 1939 Census.  She was born March 31, 1924.  She would have been 15.  So I am still looking.  Her father died in 1926 and her mother remarried and she is not living with her.  So I am still looking

Yes, Thank you.  Her name was Joan Scott.  Her mother was Emily Forrest and her father was Herbert John Scott.  She had one sister that lived, Ivy Scott who was born in 1909.  All from Nottingham.
I saw a Joan Hale (Scott) with the same birthdate but one year later in 1925 in the 1939 Census.  But so far that is all I have found.

I know a few nuns and have talked with them about their names.

My understanding is that if they share their original baptismal name with a saint, they can keep it (but may still choose to change it). If not, they choose a saint's name to replace their original name. (Maybe in some orders, they are allocated a name rather than actively choosing?) This can actually be a male saint so some nuns have names that we would ordinarily think of as a man's name. Others have the female equivalent of a man's name (Sister Pauline, for example). I don't think they tend to use their surnames except when officialdom demands it.

So if she was indeed entering holy orders, her name could have been completely changed

I don't know if this is of any help regarding name changes of nuns.

My mother had a friend who was a RC nun, I never met her but I corresponded with her from childhood, my mother and I  only knew her by her Saint's name. When she died the Convent notified me of her death, enclosed  in the letter was a printed announcement showing both her names, from this I was able to find  her death registered in her birth name.

It might depend on the order that the nuns belong to.
At school we used to do errands for the headteacher and discovered from some correspondence her real name   This caused great excitement but also fear that she would find out our secret.

I have just looked our local convent up in the 1939 register and all the entries are first name and surname so for official purposes they must have used their birth names and I know some nuns who reverted to using their own names after the reforms whilst some preferred to use their saint’s name.
