W A Baker & Co Limited Newport
« on: Tuesday 12 June 18 20:40 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Does anyone know anything about this company please?

We have a gate made by this company at our house and I traced a previous owner in 1911 who was a retired blacksmith and am wondering if there is a connection between the two. Our house is one of four and the other three have the same gates as each other.  Thank you in advance 😊

:) OK but what has a gate made by W A Baker got to do with a George Llewelyn, maybe W A Baker employed him?

Well I wondered if there was a connection due to his job and the fact the gate was different to those in the same row of houses. Maybe he had worked at the company who made the gate

Hi again, when was the house built, as to have an Ironmonger etc with that CV seems to suggest he was an important man/employer in Newport c 1901?

EDIT George Llewellyn was a Retired Farmer & Blacksmith at the Minehead address in 1911, in 1939 it was a Lodging House.
W A Baker & Co Engineering & Foundry was established 1880 at Westgate Works, Newport, one of its claims to fame is that it made a Swing Bridge to cross the Bute Canal, Whitehead Iron & Steel aquired a controlling interest in 1938.
