Registered twice

Hello can the experts please give me an opinion on this one.
My uncle was born out of wedlock in 1921, he was registered under his father's name, then in 1937 he was registered again, I didn't think a birth could be registered so long after?
He had joined the RAF in 1937, so maybe they had something to do with it. Thanks.

Dec 1937. Abbott Stanley. nee Hodgen Hemsworth

It was down to the Legitimacy Act 1926!
Effectively this Act enabled children to be legitimised by the subsequent marriage of their parents.

The late registration in 1937 is noted as an annotation on the 1921 GRO index

The original registration is as Stanley HODGENS, mmn Hodgens, Sep qtr 1921 Hemsworth 9c 368.

The apparent 1921 entry as Stanley Abbott is in fact retrospective from 1937, for the reasons others have explained.

Thank you all for that I didn't know about the 1926 act, and assumed it was to do with his joining the RAF
Thanks
