Looking to find details of a death on 12th April 1944 of Wing Commander James Kemp Tough, age 46.

Anybody able to shed any light on this?

Thanks Rosie.

I'm not sure if there is an online system that I can look at?  In Scotland there is Scotland's People, not sure if England has an Equivilent?

Regards

Alan

In England you have to purchase the certificate but you can get a PDF entry for £6 instead of the £9.25 for a certificate.  The PDF is available after a few days of ordering

The CWGC records that his unit was 156 Maintenance Unit. This was based in Algeria.

The Scottish National War Memorial records that his theatre of death was RAF NAAF (ie Northwest African Air Forces).

https://www.snwm.org/roll-search/?id=1089213&searchid=c90ca18cb0f29c1158ffac95925853a8&page=1

However, he couldn't have died overseas because the policy was not to repatriate the dead so a possible scenario is that he was evacuated to the UK in a serious condition from injury or disease and died in a Bristol hospital. The CWGC record mentions that there were military hospitals in Bristol in both wars and it seems likely that those buried in that particular plot died in hospital. The death certificate will give the cause of death.

Given his senior rank it seems highly likely that his circumstances etc will be recorded here:

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7162462

The record can be inspected on site or a copy ordered.

Would it be too much to ask for some indication of whether the information was helpful in any way?
