Ancestor on 2 different census in 1911
« on: Thursday 14 June 18 13:06 BST (UK) »
I have just come across Alfred Edward Pyle who appears on two census for 1911.  On one as Alfred E Pyle  he is listed as son, hairdresser with his family in Ipswich and on the other he is listed alone as Alfred Pyle, Head Lodger, hairdresser  in Kensington, London.  Have never come across this before, I thought the census was taken on same day throughout the country. Is this a common occurrence?

I've seen people listed twice on the same Census Census. Once at their usual residence and then lodging or visiting elsewhere.

Yes! The forms were distributed in advance, and people often filled them in in advance of the ‘official’ day. If they went away unexpectedly they could well also be included on the return of the household where they actually spent the night.
