Help Avuncular Result
« on: Thursday 14 June 18 13:50 BST (UK) »
Hello every one, Please can someone explain a result to me. I had an avuncular test done on a potential niece, myself and her mother. The test result came back as 65% and inconclusive but I don't understand it..Does this mean we aren't related at all.

I don't know too much about DNA, but I'm used to 'decoding' things people say   :P

The bottom line says the probability of the tested individuals being second degree relatives is 65%.

That sound reasonably positive to me ???

I'm sure someone more versed in DNA will come along and confirm/squash this observation  :)

Jane, doesn't the testing company give any interpretation advice?

They just said it would of been better for my brother to do the test also which he doesn't want to and that 65% in the Avuncular test is quite good as its bang on the middle but they couldn't state whether she were related or not. I'm just totally confused.

Jane, try this.

https://www.dna-worldwide.com/resource/530/paternity-profiles-and-probability

And this:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paternity_Index

And this:

http://www.metaphasegenetics.com/benefits/understanding-dna-test

It is quite techy.  I found it by searching for one if the numbers in the left column.  In preparation for getting my own dna results next month, I've learned a vast amount in the last month, but this is not quite what I have been studying for, ie not a paternity issue.

Thank you for all the links. I still don't understand how to work it out lol My brother who is alleged father wouldn't take part in the test so myself being his full sister took part along with the alleged niece and her mother.

Hi,

If you are keen to find out if/how you are related AND you have the funds for more DNA testing then I would say it's worth looking into Autosomal DNA tests.

The reason being is that the test you've already completed looks to have only tested 20-30 markers
(I counted up the rows in your table above).

Whereas, if you take an Autosomal test, e.g. the FamilyFinder test from FTDNA - this tests 700,000 markers on your DNA. There is also the Ancestry DNA Autosomal test which is similar.

This link is basic overview of the FamilyFinder test and shows you what the results page looks like:

http://www.genie1.com.au/blog/76-what-is-a-family-finder-test

You and the potential niece would both have to take the test & then see if you shared any DNA.
This chart gives guidelines on how much Autosomal DNA various relatives share:

That sounds very interesting. I was chatting with someone who said 65% is quite good considering it wasn't a paternal test we done and said it was a good probability we were related.

Can you get these Family Finder tests in the UK and if so do you have a link as that one is for USA.
