Bestford or Besford or Bessford
« on: Thursday 14 June 18 15:50 BST (UK) »
Please if anyone can help me trying to find the family of William Bestford estimated birth year 1855-1859 Fourstones Copen  Northumberland married to Julia Boddy but cannot find any record of this. I think that I have gone down the wrong path with parents George Bestford (Besford) born 1825 and Jane Wilkinson born 1827 both in Birtly. If anyone can help or guide me I would be grateful

so: 1901 census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XS96-SG2  (implying a marriage late 1880's)

& 1891 (implying a similar scenario) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:H3V7-R6Z

BESFORD, JULIA       THORNTON   1889  J Quarter in MORPETH  Volume 10B  Page 363

Alternatively......

His birthplace in 1901 and 1891 is Cowpen, which was in the Township of Horton so I think this is a possible family in 1881  :-\

RG 11 / 5116 / 7 / 5

Sleekburn, Bedlington

Robert Bestford, head, m, 49, coal miner, Northumberland Birtley
Dorothy Bestford, wife, m, 47, do Spittle
William Bestford, unm, 24, coal miner, do Horton

+ younger siblings

1855-1859 Fourstones Copen  Northumberland

Where does Fourstones come into it? It's near Hexham - quite some distance from Cowpen  :-\

Just adding the same family in 1861, living at Bebside, Cowpen  :-\

Robert Bestford, head, mar, 29, coal miner, Northumberland Birtley
Dorothy do, wife, 27, do Tweedmouth
WIlliam do, son, 4, scholar, do Morton (probably actually Murton)
Dorothy do, daur, 1, do Horton

Answering my own question  ::) I think you have found a William Bestford aged 54 born in Fourstones living in Bellingham Workhouse in 1911, and assumed that this is 'your' William.

I don't think it is  ;D Apart from anything else, as I said before, Fourstones is a fair distance inland from Cowpen.

This is surely your William Bes(t)ford, birthplace Cowpen, still in Cowpen in 1911 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWM2-8TQ

Thank you for your replies but unfortunately I cannot find any information on the marriage of Julia Body to William and that the family of Robert Bestford  William is still at home in 1891 age 34 and also with Julia Body and family under the name of Bessford age 40. I am struggling finding out who his parents are.

Still looking for William Bestfords parents. It looks as if William Bestford born in Cowpen 1853-1858 ?.Has changed  to bessford in the 1891 census
and back to Bestford in 1911 he is with his 2 sons george and thomas also Alice Cuell whose previous surname was Boddy.
In 1891 he is with his family Julia Bessford (Boddy) and 6 step children plus further children.
