I wondered if he remarried before that Andrew because of the gap in children’s births according to census and the Martin surname. All seems well though now.

The marriage of Thomas Henry to Ann is indexed as 'Register Office or Registrar Attended', the majority of which were RC. At that point, a registrar had to attend an RC marriage for it to be legitimised. The registers were retained by the registrar rather than being kept at the church.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

LancashireBMD show the original register entry (NOT the GRO copy) indexed as PRESTON/57/72.

You do need to check properly though with certificates.
Regarding Thomas born abt 1850, there is more than one and you need to be sure.

Descendants were Roman Catholic.
