Marriage Twice To Same Person?
« on: Saturday 16 June 18 11:20 BST (UK) »
Hi I was wondering if anyone can help. I’ve recently received my uncles marriage certificate from 1981. Never met him because we only recently found out who he was. He married a lady in 1981, on the certificate for both of them where it says condition, it says previous marriage dissolved. They only married once. I’ve looked at official records and there are 2 marriages listed, Robert W Morris to Norma’s with different surnames. Both marriages were registered in Oct-Nov-Dec 1981 the date of the marriage on this certificate I have is 6th November 1981. Is it possible that they were married before and got divorced then remarried? If so would that explain the terminology on the certificate?

No. They were both married before, but to different people!

Probably a coincidence that her previous name was Morris?

Incidentally, you shouldn't name them if they are still alive - It's RootsChat rules not to name living, or potentially living, people.

I’ve edited the post, Robert died nearly 20 years ago. I’m almost certain that he wasn’t married before to someone else. I’ve met with a friend of his and she said he was only married to Norma x

As K Garrad says the implication is that they were both married previously to other people.

The fact that this one marriage in Bromsgrove in 1981 is registered twice implies that the female spouse had a legal name PSAILA (from a previous marriage) but was known as MORRIS (probably due to cohabitation for a period of time) so it was registered in both names.  You will find her previous marriage in Sep qtr 1967 Birmingham.

I would expect there to be a previous marriage registration for him too at some previous point in time.

Does anyone know why it says marriage dissolved as opposed to divorced?

Dissolved just mean Divorced.
Divorce is the legal dissolution of a marriage between spouses and is obtained by a court judgement (a decree absolute).
