Incorrect page number on GRO

My apologies if this has come up before, but I have never come across it in over 10 years.
I ordered a marriage certificate from GRO, using the registration details from Free BMD and also Ancestry.
I received a full refund on my order and an e-mail saying "There is no trace of the above mentioned person at the reference you quoted"
I double checked the references, the page number on all the records is 1296, however this is on the BMD page -
'The expected page range for this district is 1309 to 1459'
Are there any other sources where I can get the correct registration details?

What year/qtr/district/page number names was it?

Yes I've checked the image for both names.

It is 1974 Worthing December Q  18 1296  Williams marrying Prout

It does seem odd.

Could you contact the local registry office ? It would be a different registration number but you might get an explanation.

The italicised “Worthing” on FreeBMD indicates that there is a mismatch between district and expected volume or page range.

There must be an error in the printed register.

If you just search for marriages in Worthing Dec 1974 there are many entries outside of the numbers 1309 to 1459.

I know this may sound daft,but are you 100% certain that you did order a marriage cert?

I had the same problem a few years back when they insisted a cert did not exist.
I had in fact ordered a death one rather than the birth one that I wanted 

I think I got so excited to actually find the right cert that I ticked the wrong box.
