Have you tried the search yourself, assuming you know where said person was born?

I have one who I know was 'legally adopted' & is on the SP Index by the name given at birth.

I have the BC which actually says on it 'Adopted'

I'm unsure about English records?

Thank you for that,

I have name and place of birth because of adoption form,

but the Mother had stated she was single ,

but the FreeBMD  have the birth cert with Father and Mothers surname .

will send for it anyway .

thank you.

The mother may well have been single, however the father's name will be included on the certificate if he attended the registration of the child with the mother and they both acknowledged paternity.
The index would then reflect this by including it under both names.

the original will still be there - it will have adopted written in the margin

My grandmother had a child before her marriage to my grandfather - I found a child and ordered the certificate, had my grandmothers details a line for the father and adopted written in the margin (this was in England in 1933
