Hi

Sybil Barara Ambrose has quite a complicated story. She was born to George Edwin Ansell and Ethel Beatrice Lipscombe in 1899.

In 1901 a census in Brighton showed her as Sybil Huntly but we assume this is because her father was married to another woman however he left his family a few years before. We expect Ambrose is a ficticious name as the birth was out of wedlock.

In 1911 Sybil Ambrose lives with Margaret Lipscombe (her grandmother) and Cyril Ambrose (her brother).

Sybil Ambrose is later known as Sybil Williams which is on my grandads adoption certificate however I'm not sure where the Williams name comes from.

Thanks

Emma

I have not found a birth record for Sybil, however a baptism showed her as a Lipscombe, registered in Fulham.

Thanks

In 1901 she's listed as niece to Joseph Lipscombe not Granddaughter, also her birthplace is Portsmouth.
Was this covering the fact she was illegitimate.
I can see George Ansell is there but how do you know he's her father?

Is Cyril (claimed born 1907) living with his family and his mother Ethel (1880) in 1939 in Poole, as Ambroses?

On the 1928 birth cert - does it show Sybil as Broomfield nee Ambrose or just as Ambrose?

Sybil was actually Sybil Williams nee Ambrose, however not sure where the surname Williams came from.

The birth certificate shows both Sybil and George Broomfield. The birth record is Robert G in 1928, indexed as both names.

Yes, we believe this is covering the fact she was illegitimate. Ancestry DNA matches have been used to work out that George Ansell was the father.
