Antigua Court Marshall
« on: Tuesday 19 June 18 01:06 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I am researching a John Thompson who was transported to NSW Australia as a convict on the "Lord Sidmouth" which sailed from London on 20 September 1818.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment by an Antigua Court Marshall.

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction as to how I can find out any details of the Court Marshall. As he sailed from London I guess he was imprisoned in the UK after the Court Marshall.

Thanks

It seems that there is little knowledge of John Thompson on this site. I will try my luck on one of the English sites.
Thanks to all who have taken the time to read this thread.

Hi

Can't help with this but in your searching you should perhaps use the spelling Court Martial, sometimes hyphenated.

There's a John Thomson (not Thompson) on the hulk Bellerophon, briefly, in 1818. Received from the West Indies 26 August 1818; convicted of desertion at Antigua 1 December 1817; discharged to the Lord Sidmouth for NSW 4 September 1818. Aged 27.

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction as to how I can find out any details of the Court Marshall.

The records are held at the National Archives, Kew. Some of them are indexed online on Ancestry.

There's a record in their database UK, Naval and Military Courts-Martial Registers, 1806-1930 for the deserter found by ShaunJ above who was tried on 1 December 1817 (entered as Thompson, from WO 92/1). He was in the Royal West India Rangers.

It's an index reference only, and to find the details of the hearing itself you would need to see the image, which I believe can be accessed on Fold3, a separate paysite ...
