T.H. PEARCE
« on: Tuesday 19 June 18 06:44 BST (UK) »
My Greatgrandfather, Thomas Henry Pearce, died 21 November 1927 in Dover.  He was buried at the Charlton Cemetery, according to his obituary.  I sent away for his death certificate and was told none could be found.  Any suggestions?

The reference you need, when applying to the GRO, is:

Year: 1927
Quarter: December
Registration District: Dover
Volume: 2a
Page: 1349
Name: Pearce, Thomas H

(From FreeBMD)
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Yup, that's what I used.  They said it could not be found.

Well I think it is worth a telephone call to ONS, you don't want to lose any money, that happened to me years ago with my grandmother's death certificate, soon sorted

Good Luck

Did you order by clicking the reference on the GRO website, or did you fill in the details yourself? If the latter, could you have made a typo?

I would ask them to look again, because that is exactly what is shown on their website.

Are you sure you asked for a Death Certificate, and not a Birth Certificate?
It's an easy mistake to make ;D

I thought that nowadays the GRO always refunded if they can't find it  :-\

ADDED
It appears on their online index

Not sure about those facts now  Rosie as I haven't needed to find out,  was about 1996 when I lost  some of my monies till they found out I was right, then they posted off the certificate, no problems at all, must admit they and also myself got it right each time since, it is worth a telephone call though
