1851 census I've lost Helen Charlotte Johnston
« on: Tuesday 19 June 18 20:22 BST (UK) »
I have lost Helen in the 1851 census, found her once & stupidly didn't save the record :(
Helen Charlotte Johnston (Johnstone or Johnson) baptised 25 Oct 1807 Inveresk with Musselburgh
Her mother died in 1810 and father remarried in Berwick upon Tweed 1811
I have her in 3 censuses as follows
1841 Avenue/Ness Berwick, aged 27, a milliner in the household of James Turnbull,
1861 Ravensdowne Berwick, aged 47, head, milliner & dressmaker
1871 Ravensdowne Berwick, aged 59, head dressmaker
Helen died 27 Oct 1871 and was buried at Berwick Cemetery
Headstone Inscription: Erected by SARAH MONTAGUE DODDS, in Memory of her sister HELEN CHARLOTTE JOHNSTON daughter of the late Lieut. Johnston 55th Militia who died 27th October 1872, aged 64 years. (Year must be wrong here, I have her sister's baptism & marriage details)
Probate granted 4 Jan 1872
Would appreciate any help finding Helen in 1851. I am certain she is in Berwick.
Helen had two brothers, William baptised 12 Feb 1803 Edinburgh and John Charles Steven baptised 10 Feb 1810 Edinburgh. If anyone comes across them I would appreciate a heads up!
Thanks
Christine

How could she have been baptised in 1807?

1841 also has her born abt 1814.

You mention father’s 2nd marriage - they must be Helen’s parents  :-\

Here is the baptism referred to in 1807

Perhaps she just told a fib about her age.

Thanks for finding her! That fills in her gap beautifully :)
Helen's baptism here
 https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3Ahelen~%20%2Bsurname%3Ajohnston~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1807-1807~%20%2Bfather_givenname%3Acharles~%20%2Bmother_givenname%3Arebecca~%20%2Brecord_country%3AScotland

She must have fibbed fairly consistently in census (maybe because she was a spinster?) but death age agrees with baptism date. Her parents were Rebecca Stevens & John Charles Johnston who married in 1801 in Edinburgh. John was a printer at the time. Rebecca died 1st march 1810 (from newspaper) a few weeks after their 4th child was born, Rebecca Johnstone, wife of Lieutenant Johnstone Aberdeenshire Militia, buried 3 March Edinburgh
John Charles married Mary Steavenson in Berwick in 1811 by licence dated 28 January stating he is a widower Lieutenant in Aberdeenshire Militia. I am fairly certain there were no children to this marriage.
I have only recently made the link between John C Johnston and his previous family. It is clear that both daughters moved to Berwick. I'm working on what happened to the sons; it's clear they had died by 1871.
Thanks again everyone for the input :)

1841 Avenue/Ness Berwick, aged 27, a milliner in the household of James Turnbull

Head of household is Frances TURNBULL, the same as 1851.
