Bulmers arrived on The Douglas 1850

Hi,

Hopefully posted in the right forum this time.

Just found out that my relative Mary Bulmer and daughter Rachel arrived on The Douglas on 11/1/1850 - having lost husband John and daughter Jane Ann on route (both appeared to have died of cholera - taken from a letter Mary wrote to her father Robert Wise - published in the Hull Advertiser & Exchange Gazette).

What I would like to know is, are there lists for passenger departures for 1850-1851, as I believe Mary and Rachel were back in the UK by 1851 - as they appear on the 1851 census together taken in March 1851. From the letter published it indicated that she was not wanting to stay in Australia.

If you have a look in Trove for The Douglas....there are various reports of the ship arriving in Australia and what happened on board

Many thanks for the links Willsy and Rosball, certainly sounded a horrific voyage. Mary's letter contained much the same information, although I think the dates are different for her husband and daughtersdeaths, the Captain being drunk for around three quarters of the voyage and about him selling rum and brandy, about the lack of food and cost of it. Also she mentions about the songs and more drinking after burying someone at sea. She did have a good word for the ordinary crew though.

Once in Australia she indicates that she could stay at Mr Bullocks, but rents are high, 7 shillings a week and that she would have to support herself.

Would love to know what happened next, hopefully just to fill in the gaps between arrival in Australia and her return to the UK.
