Widows pensions were only awarded if the husband died while on active service.
Overseas marriages are/were recognised in the UK.
As he was a time served CPO when he retired it's highly unlikely he would end up on a building site.
I'm with AnthonyMMM on this one. 2 different people.

.... He eventually married Evelyn Bessie in  1954 when he was 83...

Do you have copy of that document?

I am clearly having to go back to basics with this one and get at marriage certificate, at least.

Up until now I have been relying upon oral family history and making use of on-line sources.

Between 1925-1980 there was only one Young(groom) and Beer(bride) marriage in Devon (Newton Abbot) and between 1954-1983 one Henry  J Young death in Devon (Newton Abbot) - Henry Jefferd Young.

The 1939 entry makes a nonsense of the "obvious" conclusion  I  arrived at.

Can you establish positively which Henry Young is yours.

West Sussex County Times 22 Mar 1957

A former Horsham resident, Mr Henry Jefford Young , who left the district two years ago for health reasons , died at his daughter's home in Torquay recently. For 12 years previously Mr Young had lived with his sister Mrs K E Bartlett at 6 Rusper Road , Horsham. During this period he became a well known and popular figure locally...regular worshipper at the church , attending social events in the Roffey area. Mr Young , who was 86 , served as an officer with the Royal Navy in WW1. He was buried last week at Gosport Cemetery , where his wife is interred.

It would appear that his family chose not to acknowledge the second marriage , if they knew about it. Perhaps leaving the district for health reasons was actually leaving the district to marry ?

That's a terrific find, Christine.

The marriage certificate is how an imperative.

I have now received the marriage certificate which confirms that I  have managed to get myself In a complete tangle with this one.

The groom was Henry John Young, aged 68, (previous marriage disolved), porter (B R) retired. Son of Charles Young (dec'd), labourer. Witnesses Ethel Male and Làura Brimecombe. Married Newton Abbot Register Office. Bride and groom of same Torquay address. (Consistent -nearly- with 1939 register)

Back to square one  and try and find out what I can about Henry John and when he was free to marry again. ( Have had a quick look but nothing pops up immediately).
