Uniform ID Please
« on: Thursday 21 June 18 13:46 BST (UK) »
Hi All...I wonder if anyone can give me any information on William Henry Griffin b. 1870 possibly Cardiff.
His medal inscription says:
T.Eng. W. H. Griffin RNR

He received The British Medal, The Military Medal and the 14/15 Star.

Also does this information fit with the guy in the photo dated 1937 who it is believed is William.

Thanks for looking.

Carol

Added, the first photo is now not thought to be William Henry Griffin

I may be completely wrong, but he appears to be only wearing one British Medal which, from the ribbon and shape of the shoulder looks like the Queen's  or King's South Africa Medal from the Boer War. What the other decorations are I cannot tell.

The WH Griffin with the medals was a Warrant Engineer (Ancestry calls them Wheeled Tankers Engineer!!!! - the roll is also not the Long Service and GC medals !!!), a senior position above the ratings but not commissioned.  As Jebber says, none of the medals accord with his awards and his uniform is not a Royal Navy one.

His service record is at Kew, download for £3.50   http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C14637262

Oh thanks Max...That's really helpful..probably not the owner of the medals I have then. I did have my doubts when I scanned the photo and saw the medals as the shapes don't match. I really thought it was William as he was a Marine Engineer in 1898.
I will have to look for another candidate then.

So pleased that I asked.

I wondered if either of the other medals were Masonic, but I cannot find anything to match the one on the left, the middle one is obscured so difficult to tell anything about it.

He appears to be wearing Mess Dress, although he is very slovenly dressed for a military man.

Have you got anyone else of the right age to have served in the Boer War?

I wonder if it could be this guy:

Pardon my ignorance but I haven't a clue on military Uniform.

Nothing obvious coming to light.

In the photo he appears to be wearing two other medal types, neither of which look military, all but the upper right hand Medal are worn in a strange disorganised fashion.

He is quite elderly and the photo was taken in 1937...I presume many years after the event, which could account for his "Slovenly" (as you put it)...appearance. I think this was done for a special occasion.
