Help with my 3rd great grannies maiden name please
« on: Thursday 21 June 18 18:53 BST (UK) »
Hello,

My two family members (bottom entry) were married way back in 1891 and I'm struggling with the handwriting slightly. In particular, I need help to identify the maiden name of the groom's mother. It looks as though she is Mary Ross, formerly McQuade (I know she was married and took this name) but I am scratching my head over the maiden name. It looks like a Mc but I can't quite make out the rest.

Any help would be appreciated as I am currently in Ireland from Glasgow for a week, researching this side of the family and this is the biggest breakthrough we have had so far! :)

Thank you!

Thank you so much folks, now that you've said McCrea I completely agree with you have started searching.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to source any records (yet) with a Mary McCrea.

I'm finding it so difficult to find information in Ireland due to the census situation. We came over with nothing but James McQuaid's birth certificate saying he was born in Armagh workhouse (Mother marked as a widow and he was marked as illegitimate).

Spent an entire day in PRONI on Tuesday and managed to find entries from the Indoor Workhouse Register that showed his birth and details of siblings we had no idea about so over the moon with that, but as you all know, the curiosity intensifies with each find ha!

I see you are referring to the surname as McQuaid whereas on the document it is spelled McQuade.
It may have been the person completing the document just wrote the surnames as he thought they should be spelled.  So have you tried searching for different spellings of McCrea? e.g. McCreagh etc?
