Lewis Jackson b. 1785
« on: Thursday 21 June 18 22:00 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me with finding out more information about my 4x great grandfather- Lewis Jackson. He was born in 1785 in Tweedsmuir to Alexander Jackson and Agnes Thomson. He married Isabella Young in Penicuik in 1815 and had my 3x Great grandmother- Agnes Jackson in 1818 in Moffat. But after that the records dried up and I cannot find anymore information on him and when he died. The same goes for his wife as I cannot find her in the censuses either.

As far as I can see there was only one Lewis Jackson born in Scotland between 1785 & 1795, yours.

On SP there is a Lewis Jackson age 50 on the 1841 census in Moffat. Transcribed elsewhere as born Dumfriesshire 1791 Woollen Hand Loom Weaver, abode  Radi Close, Moffat. He is alone and not on 1851.

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Unfortunately before official registration of Birth/Marriages/Deaths became compulsory in Scotland in 1855 the records can be very sparse or non existent. Some were never recorded and others were lost because they were kept in such conditions that they disintegrated.

It is just luck if you find what you are looking for, sorry.

That's a shame as I was hoping to find out when he died as well as who were Isabella's parents. Thanks anyway.
