Brothel of Woolsthorpe by Colsterworth
« on: Friday 22 June 18 12:26 BST (UK) »
The family I cannot google!

I have recently discovered that my 3 x great grandmother was one Elizabeth BROTHEL, baptised at Woolsthorpe on 9 February 1756, the daughter of Thomas and Ann.

She married my 3 x great grandfather Francis ROBOTTOM at Woolsthorpe on 20 January 1784 and in due course they begat my 2 x great grandfather William ROEBOTTOM, baptised at Caythorpe on 31 March 1791.

Can anyone point me to any information about this family, which seems either to have disappeared or to have, sensibly, changed its name.

Thanks

Are you talking about the Brothels or Robottoms who have disappeared?

I presume you have the Marriage of Thomas Brothel to Mary Green 14 Nov 1728

She was buried 17 Jan 1747/8 age 43 (Wife of Thomas)

Burial THOMAS Brothell 15 Sep 1757, no age given

THOMAS/ANN Baptsised;
HANNAH 20 Nov 1749
JOHN 16 Jun 1751
ELIZABETH as you state 09 Feb 1756

ANN Brothel, Widow, then Baptised JAMES 10 May 1761

So Thomas may have been married twice.
Cant find the Marriage to Ann yet.

The Burial of Thomas 1757 is I am sure yours as Ann then has a illeg Son James 1761.

Hello
What  a great name! That's one to keep things interesting.

So what else is there?
Siblings Hannah 27.11.1749-5.11.1794  ,son John 16.6.1651- buried 12.12.1769,James and Richard  15 May 1754 (James buried 12.8.1757),Elizabeth 9.2.1756 at Woolsthorpe

Thomas was unfortunately buried 15 Sep 1757 a labourer. Anna 21.10.1802 is probably the mother Ann.
There is a marriage at Little Ponton by licence 21.1. 1748 which may be them
Thomas Brothwell of elsewhere and Anne Brothwell 25 from elsewhere.
Really probing questions asked there.
But the register gives of Woolthorpe

Also there is a Ursula Brothel married Matthew Selby 5.1.1745 of Sp?ainby
She was bapt at Great Gonerby Nov 1720 d of John and Mary Brothwell.
There is a sister Ann 7.7.1723.

Possible parents for Thomas at Woolthorpe -Thomas Brothel widower labourer buried 17.3.1746 and his wife Mary 17.1.1747 age 43
Married 14.11.1728 ,her surname Green.

Thomas married Elizabeth Reare 19.7.1702 with son Thomas baptised 3.8.1703.
Elizabeth buried 11.3.1743.Grandparents perhaps but it could be the Thomas born 1703 was the one who died 1757 and he had two wives Mary and Anne. Then Dad born 1660's died 1746.

Thomas s of Thomas and Ann 1.3.166?
Others with mother Elizabeth -Richard 7.2.1663,Alse 21.1.1665,Richard 24.4.1670

It looks like only Richard survived  and he may have moved to Stainfield in 1772 as Brothill but I can't see the original so don't know where he came from.

God this is so gooooood

Looks like we all had a good time ,sorry to duplicate but I was typing.

Well, I'd tried pronouncing it Bro-thell, with the accent on the second syllable, but that just sounded like Mrs Bucket.

Thanks for the alternative spellings and the hints for further research.

I've got a line that connects to Woolsthorpe and Ponton. They often stray into Leicestershire and Notts for periods of time then saunter back to expire and feed the daisies close to where they were baptised or married.
