John Duncannon - (Kaanan)?
« on: Friday 22 June 18 17:17 BST (UK) »
Looking for help please.  My 3 x great grandfather was Charles Duncannon.  He was born in 1802 in Pickering, Yorkshire (census records).  He married his first wife in 1825, she died and Charles remarried in 1844.  His second marriage certificate states that his father was John Duncannon, occupation soldier.

I have found a baptism record for Pickering in 1802 for Charles, son of John Kaanan (Irishman) and Jane.  This could be a transcription error especially if the information was given verbally.  So, if this is the correct baptism, what was the real surname and where do I look now?  Charles's son later shortened his name to Duncan.

I have looked for siblings of Charles and drawn a blank.  Any help would be much appreciated.

I would say Duncannon was his real name & the other as you say is a mis-spelling, it happened all of the time.
As his father is a soldier there may be siblings born elsewhere even overseas.
Have you looked for service records for John.

Thanks Jim, I’m inclined to agree.  I have searched the usual suspects, Ancestry, FindMyPast, FamilySearch, etc. FreeBMD has just one death for John Duncannon in Wolverhampton in 1854, that’s feasible on the assumption that John was about 25 in 1802, I’ll get the death certificate.  No such luck with Jane.  My knowledge of military research is non-existent, is there anywhere that I should specifically look?

FindMyPast is the first place to look. You can do a free search first.

Thanks Jim, you saved me the cost of a certificate, I should have checked.  Radcliffe, many thanks too.  I think that St Mary's is Catholic but the baptism record that I checked is C 0f E.  The other spelling may be of help, so far I have Kaanan, Duncan, Duncannon, Domcannon, Dunkin, Donkin, etc, etc.  Onwards and upwards!

There is a private John Kaanan who died in India in 20 March 1811, HM Royal Regiment, maybe this is him?  Work to do.

Thanks again

The John Kaanan who died in India in 1811 I think was too young to have been a father in 1802.  That leaves the question as to what happened to John and Jane Duncannon after the birth of their son Charles.  I’ve found no deaths in FreeBMD or FindMyPast.  If they went ‘home’ to Ireland, could anyone give me a few pointers about where to look?

Thanks
