James Crow
« on: Saturday 23 June 18 00:47 BST (UK) »
Hi. A new dilemma. I have a James Crow who married Margaret Reid in Gilcomston Church Aberdeen 6.2.1821. Can't find birth regos for either. They had a son, John Reid Crow, 10.4.1821. After that, I can't make out what became of them. Census records come up with a James Crow married to an Ann Dunbar née Duncan. 1841 Greyfriars Parish census shows James as 65 Ann 45 James & David 7 Alex 25 James Dunbar 21. 1851 James Crow 76 Ann 54 David & James 17. 1861 Gilcomston Parish James 66?? Ann 63 James 27. Can't find anything to do with James Crow & Margaret Reid. John Reid Crow married Jane Christie and their son, John, managed to acquire an E on the end of Crow. I found a James Crow who died aged 22 on 27.7.1824 in Aberdeen but don't know if anything to do with Margaret Reid's husband. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated. Thnakyou

Hi ,

Have you looked for a death for the James Crow you were following on the 1841 , 1851 , and 1861 Census ?
Death James Crow , age 89 , 1864 Old Machar Aberdeen(SP) , would that mention any previous wife ?

Looks like that James Crow also left a Will(dated 5th Aug. 1864) , would that mention children ?

The James Crow you were following on the Census gives his birthplace as Glenbervie Kincardineshire in 1851 , and his death in 1864 gives his mother's maiden name as Falconer.

Not sure if these are connected but adding just in case(Aberdeen FHS M.I.s) -

I have a lot of Crows in my tree from Kincardineshire and Angus. The further back I go, the spelling reverts back to the Scots pronunciation of 'Craw'. See if that brings anything up for you.

James Crow married Ann Duncan in 1833 in Aberdeen.

Unfortunately most deaths weren't recorded in the OPRs. So if this James Crow is the same that married Margaret Reid, it's not easy to find out if she died.

Your best bet is to look at the death record that ev has mentioned. However, be aware that the information on this is reliant on the informant and I've had many death records where the first wife has been left out by the informant, either because they didn't know, or some other reason.

There was a James Craw born in 1775 in Glenbervie, Kincardineshire. His father his named as David Craw. This age matches up with the death record ev found and this James Crow did have a son named David (named after James father probably).

A David Crow and Margaret Falconer marry in Glenbervie in 1774.

EDIT: I also have a David Crow from Kincardineshire b.1734 Fordoun (5x g-grandfather). Though he married a Christina Finlayson. They lived and a lot of children in the Fordoun area.
