There is this death which could be worth looking into -

There are a number of Australian newspapers reporting on the above death.

The birth details (date & location) do seem to fit, as there's a James Lindsay, actor on 1901 the right age and born CLovelly. Not sure sure aout the parentage as his purported father died nearly 8 months earlier in Chile

Is James married to Florence on 1891c ?

In that 1911 it looks as though James is “married” to Gladys Eva Lindsay age 29
Says they’ve been married one year.

Did anyone find a marriage for Julia/Violet and James?  If there was one it may have taken place in another country.  Outliers in my research, also actors, married while the company they were with was working in the USA. In 1908.  (Interestingly one of them appears in one newspaper report with Violet Dene)

Florence filed for divorce in 1898 claiming James committed adultery with an unknown member of the acting company he was with in summer 1896. Not sure if granted

On the cert his father is Charles John Douglas Lindsay Baker, army officer

[added] but on his baptism his father is a auctioneer! And he was born in London not Clovelly!

The petition also states that there was a case of adultery on 3 Jan 1898, Leeds.

There is a newspaper article in The Era 01 January 1898 reporting that Violet Dene was performing at the Grand Theatre, Leeds.

And in fact Charles John must have died between 1871 and 1881 as in 1881 mother Elizabeth is widowed and running a boarding house. james recorded as J.Lindsay. Seems to be only child

Added - deleted completely unlikely death!

Added,  I don’t think the divorce can have progressed otherwise the decree nisi date would be filled in.
