Is the record completely clear as to the title?  There were four South African infantry battalions in the Great War (along with other types of unit) but none that I can identify with a title like that.

Would you like to either post a clip from his record or if his record is on line preferably give his service number and we can cross check (there are a number of William Henry Squires).

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

That does help, it was previous service I see.

MR is highly likely to be Mounted Rifles, there wer a number of such regiments, can't find one yet with M first letter - still looking, someone may find them!

I find Midland Mounted Rifles
https://www.angloboerwar.com/unit-information/south-african-units/426-midland-mounted-rifles
a unit raised in South Africa.  There are enrolment records at the National Archives but they are not on line.
Could he have been there as a civilian and joined up there?  He doesn't appear on any Boer War medal roll.
