baptism for Mary Strachan
« on: Saturday 23 June 18 18:58 BST (UK) »
Help needed to find a baptism for Mary Strachan born about 1790, not certain which county at this point, could be Thurso, Caithness, or another county, I think she was from a well-to-do family as she was called a Miss Mary Strachan on her marriage record to  Benjamin Carnbay a ship owner in Thurso in 1811.

Hi not a lot to go on on Scotlands People his surname is Cumaby and there are only 2 records with that name his marriage and a marriage of a Forbes Cumaby to an Alexander Robeson also in Thurso 1811

Did Benjamin and Mary have any children with possible clues in their names

Just as a side note with your info Wendy. There are at least four children showing to Alexander Robertson and Forbes Carnaby. From Family Search (link shrunk) www.rootschat.com/links/01m91/

Mary and Benjamin had a son called John Strachan Carnaby possibly  named after Mary's father Can't see a possible baptism for Mary with a father John in the right time period
Surname also spelt Carnoby
Other children of Mary and Benjamin
Alexander b 1811 died young?
John b 1813
Anne Elizabeth b1816
Alexander b 1818
Janet Downie b 1820
Mary Anne b 1824
Mary's mother possible Anne as it looks like they followed the naming tradition

Their children:
Jane Downie Carnaby 1820
John Strachan Carnaby 1813
Anne Elizabeth Jennings Carnaby 1816
Marianne Anne Carnaby 1823

It's possible it could be Jennings, whilst Downie was their grandmother's maiden name,

Thanks for the info, there must be a family link here somewhere, this could be Mary Strachan's family, perhaps the family moved from Thurso and Mary is born elsewhere. There is a definite link to merchants and shop owners so I think they moved around a fair bit.

Interesting Carnaby baptism records
Forbes Carnaby 1793 to Alexander Carnaby and Janet Downie
Forbes Carnaby 1796 to Hogarth Carnaby and Janet Downie
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
