I've hit a dead end with my GGF :(
« on: Saturday 23 June 18 22:39 BST (UK) »
Hi there, I'm new to Roots Chat.

I just wondered if anyone had any advice. I am searching for records of my great grandfather. His name was Henry Bertram Harris. He is listed as a 4 year old 'boarder' on the 1911 census, with the Frederick Cornish family in Somerset. His birth place is listed as Essex.

I can't find any further records of his birth and I don't know either of his parents' names.

Does anyone know why he might have ended up across the country as a boarder with another family?

Thanks in advance for any help or tips!

Mel 😊

Track the host family back to see if any brothers/sisters ended up Essex way?

Possible birth in June quarter 1906 in Chelmsford - Harry Bertram Harris, no mothers maiden name on GRO record. Fits with info from Suzard

Looks like he was illegitimate.  Buying a copy of the 1906 birth cert will give his mothers name

Welcome from me too.

Stock and Ingatestone seem to be the two suggested possible birthplaces for him.  Both were in Chelmsford registration district.

He is on the 1939 register under his surname but just his initials.  You can find the entry by inputting his surname and date of birth

Definitely investigate the CORNISH family. I have one "boarder" on the census who turned out to be the illegitimate grandson of the head of household and another "boarder" who was the great-nephew of the head of household- in the latter case, tracing the host family turned out to be the breakthrough I needed.

Looks like he was illegitimate.  Buying a copy of the 1906 birth cert will give his mothers name

which you can order here https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp  a PDF emailed to you is cheaper (and arrives sooner!) than the legal certificate
