More info on Henry and Richard Dudley Civil War.
« on: Sunday 24 June 18 09:57 BST (UK) »
Hello
I’m looking for more info on these two Gentlemen.

Lieutenant Henry Dudley
Of Swepstone, Leic
Served in Lord Loughborough (Henry Hastings) Regiment
Listed as such such on one publication
‘1s of Thomas the Vintner’
Captured in a fight near Melton Mowbray 1643
Described as ‘That great robber of the country’

I’m trying to find his baptism, I assume he is the Henry Dudley baptising children in Twycross, Leic and Swepstone, Leic in the 1640s listed as a Gentleman and who dies 1686 Odstone, Leic as Henry Dudley Esq.

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Dudley
Of Swepstone?
Serving in John Barnards Regiment
‘Ex Captain of Hastings Horse’
‘Prisoner of War 1644 at Upton Warren, Worcestershire and was exchanged’
‘Fined 1/10th £106 in 1649’

Thank you for that.

I’ve done some more digging and I’ve found that Henry Dudley Esq of Odstone is not the Lieutenant Henry Dudley of Swepstone.
Although it is confusing.
Firstly, Martyn Bennett gives Lieutenant Henry Dudley as 1st Son of Thomas Dudley, Vintner of London. I’m not sure where this source comes from though.
Thomas the Vintner baptised his children in London. But he himself was bapt 1589 Swepstone.
According to London Visitation Thomas only had two sons, a Henry and Francis. So Henry of Odstone can’t be the same Henry.

This only leaves the Uttoxeter baptism as a possibility as there was a Henry and William born to the same parents and ages fit.
But Henry of Odstone also baptised two children in Swepstone so I’m not sure if there is a family connection.

I believe Richard Dudley Gent of Cosby c1650-1710  is indeed the son of Henry Dudley Esq of Odstone and not the Richard bapt 1644 Swepstone for the following reasons.
Richard names two of his children Henry and Frances.
Henry lists a son Richard as overseer of his will and gives money to the poor of Odstone.
On Richards will he gives money to the poor of Cosby which is understandable considering he married and baptised his children and was living here, but he also gives money to the poor of Odstone but doesn’t seem to have any connection to this place other than through Henry.
On Richards Will 1710 his sister Hannah Bill is one of the witnesses.

The only Henry Dudley in Leicestershire is the Henry Dudley Gent/Esq who is married to Frances and who baptised children firstly in Twycross 1641 then Swepstone then an 18yr gap and then baptises s a child in Twycross.
It seems Thomas the Vintner and his wife Bridget didn’t have anymore sons as far as I know so it seems my Henry was not the lieutenant Henry based on the fact that Henry of Odstone lists a brother William on his will in 1686 and Thomas and Bridget don’t seem to have had a son William.
