Quite a long article, front page and continued on Page 4, so have minimised:

Head on Crash on Icy Road
Three ambulances, passing cars, buses and lorries were used to convey 25 people to Sunderland hospitals, who were injured when two single deck buses, laden with early-morning workers, collided on the snow covered Sunderland - Chester le Street road near Penshaw monument.

One bus finished half way through the hedge, and the driver Ernest ?ishman, 52, Sylvia Terrace, Stanley had to be extricated from the wrecked cab. He was detained in Royal Infirmary with a rib injury.

The second bus travelling towards Chester le Street, skidded on the icy road at the top of a small incline, and crashed head on with the other vehicle. The driver William Tasker, Sancroft Drive, Houghton was treated for an arm injury.

Other four of the injured,Stella Redpath of Castle View, Old Penshaw(leg and head injuries),Margaret Parr,26,Ashbrook Mount, Sunderland(lacerated face and head),James Waters(40)Grange Street South, Sunderland,(leg injuries) and Frank Smith(59)coal sampler, Dene StreetPallion(head and face injuries)were detained in hospital, the remainder were allowed to leave after treatment.
The seat immediately behind the driver on the Sunderland bound bus, occupied by Stella Redpath had to be levered up by uninjured passengers to release her legs, a witness told Sunderland Echo reporter 'she was quite cheerful throughout her ordeal and smoked a cigarette throughout the whole time.'
many of the injured were treated at Penshaw Hill House for first aid treatment before being conveyed to hospital.

Going to look at Page 4 now....

Thank you so much for taking the time to write all of that out for me.
My grandmother was on the bus at the time and was badly injured.
She spent a month in hospital and lost her memory because of her head injury. Her mother in law nursed her back to full health after she was discharged from hospital.
Thanks again
Kind regards
Claire
