Tolmie/Porteous Dalkeith
« on: Sunday 24 June 18 23:31 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I've found a branch of my Irish family originally came from Dalkeith.

I found Henry Tolmie in the 1841 census with his father William, brother William and mother Jean. His mother is Jean Porteous. Her parents (as far as I can work out) are James Porteous and Isabel Cummings. Henry's grandparents on his father's side (again as far as I can work out) are John Tolmie and Elizabeth Canker.

From his first marriage to Ann Maxwell (1852) they had one child Christina. Ann died at some point before 1861, when Christina is found living with Henry's brother William.

Christina married William Warrington circa 1893/4 in Edinburgh. They had (an illegitimate) daughter Christina in 1893. Christina (sr) and William both died in the first couple of years of 1900's. Christina Warrington then married Jame Crichton a miner from Dalkeith. I think Christine Crichton died in 1974.

So, I've found a fair bit although some of it, especially the older links, aren't 100% certain.

I was just hoping somebody might have a few extra sources for the Tolmie or Porteous families working back, or even the Crichtons.

Thanks in advance,

Paul

Hi Paul ,

Death Christina Crichton(other surname Warrington) , age 81 , 1974 St. George Midlothian , mother's maiden name Tolmie(ScotlandsPeople).

Deceased Online has a Christina Crichton , died 21st Nov. 1974 , cremated 23rd Nov. 1974 , Edinburgh.

Marriage James Crichton / Christina Warrington , 1922 Liberton Midlothian(SP).
If you haven't done so already I would download this marriage certificate to obtain both sets of parents for James and Christina.

Hi Ev,

thanks for the replies.

I have those bits of info thanks very much, although I think the cremation might be extra. I haven't paid to get the death cert, which I think I might have to do, just to see if it mentions other family members.

I haven't found their marriage, but Christina Warrington's birth cert has illegitimate clearly marked on it. William is listed as father though, so I suspect they married very soon after. William was a widow by this point and had a family from his first marriage.

By the 1911 census Christina is in an orphanage training for service.

I also found James and Christina's marriage thanks, so I am probably moving into the territory of living people, or births and marriages too recent for inclusion on genealogy sites.  I'd love to know if Christina and James Crichton had children though.

I'm only learning my way around the Scottish records. I've been on Scotlandspeople. I like the credit system, but I'm tempted to click on so many :)

Thanks for your help
