Compressing photo files
« on: Tuesday 26 June 18 11:28 BST (UK) »
Before my last laptop died and I had Office 2003, I used to use Microsoft Picture Manager (MPM) for this.  One click and the file was compressed for emailing/website/whatever.  Hey presto!

Now I have Office 365 and MPM isn't included, the system defaults to Photos.  I see there a Resize option there, but I don'treally want to re-size the file, I want to compress it - so that I can post it here.  I've tried Googling, but they all seem to go into great detail about Resize, but nothing about compressing.  I tried to download MPM, but my bossy anti-virus program blocked it.

Can anyone explain how to compress a file in Photos, please?

Thanks

If you want the photos restored, you should keep compression to a minimum. Better to resize than compress as you lose  pixel detail when you compress.

Microsoft Office Picture Manager can compress photo files.

Er, I know, that's what I used to have - didn't I say that in my OP? - but since change of laptop/software, I don't have it any more, which is why I'm asking for help.

Thanks. Didn't know that.  However, in this particular case it's not restoration I'm after.

I did not realise that Microsoft Office Picture Manager isn’t included in the new Office, however this site "Editing photos without Picture Manager" says you can use Word to edit photos.

Well,  a photo (assuming it's JPG or similar), IS compressed.   That's what the jpg format does.  All you can sensibly do is "resize" - and that reduces the number of pixels, and thus the number of bytes, in the file..   JPGs are already compressed, and using any other software to try to further compress a JPG will have very little impact on the file size.    As you say, a RESIZE will reduce image quality.

The max file size here is 500KB, so if you have a file that's larger than that, how do you "resize" it in Photos to get it below the limit for uploading here, please?
