The 6th Bn was a service battalion (ie war raised and not pre-war territorial)  they wore the same cap badge as the regulars.  I suspect that your man enlisted into one of the war raised battalions, 6th is likely) and was either issued the parade uniform shown in the photo until khaki ones were made available or borrowed it for a photo.
