Tracing the SCALES family
« on: Wednesday 27 June 18 00:41 BST (UK) »
Ann Scales was my 2nd great-grandmother.  She married Thomas Fevers in 1814 in Doncaster.  I have an 1841 census that indicates that she is about 50 years old which has her born around 1791.
I also have a death certificate which says she died in 1848 in Doncaster at age 60 so we are a little off but nothing serious.

The Scales name is common in this part of South Yorks and there are several Anns and Hannahs (and Williams).  One Ann was born in Armthorpe in 1791 and that is the one I am interested in because the timing is reasonable.  Her parents were William and Ann.

From FindMyPast I found a William Scales who married an Ann Scoles in 1785 in Doncaster.  It appears as though this couple had the following children:
1785 - Mary
1789 - Thomas
1791 - Ann
1798 - Harriet
1801 - Hannah
So this might be my Ann.  But what do you think?

Thanks for any input you have.

Adult ages on the 1841 census were rounded down to a multiple of 5 years.

So, an age shown as 50 could be any age from 50 to 54 ;D
And, hence, a year of birth could be from 1787 to 1791.

I didn't realize that.  Thank you for pointing this out.
