my 4 times great grandfather, Joseph TOOP
« on: Thursday 28 June 18 06:45 BST (UK) »
I have just discovered that my 4 times great grandfather served in the 40th Foot Regiment from 1809-1817.  He was born in Frome, Somerset in 1789.

The catalogue discription at the National Archives, Kew has a reference Number of WO 97/566/124.
It states that Joseph TOOP alias Joseph TOOPE, born Frome, Somerset served in the 40th Foot Regiment.  Discharged aged 30.

The National Archives public record also states that the full transcription is available through Findmypast.

I have a subscription with Findmypast, but I am unable to see the transcription or to download it.

Is anyone able to help me?

Thank you

cmatt

Try this link https://search.findmypast.com/record?id=GBM/WO97/566/649934  or just search the British Army Records 1760-1915 for Joseph Toope with no birth date

Wow, thank you so much for this document.  I am very happy to now know and have proof that Joseph served in the Peninsula War.

Many thanks, indeed

You have noticed I am sure on the reverse side of his discharge paper is the confirmation that he served at the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815.
His medal entitlements to the Waterloo medal and to the Peninsular War medals are available on Ancestry.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
