I came across this recently  - never knew about it before.
I did a search on here and it's mentioned once as a reason why some records were destroyed.
A very dramatic story.
Knott - Northumberland; Yorkshire (?Bridlington.)
Fenwick, Johnston - Northumberland.
Dixon; Hutchinson - York.
Shaw - ? Glasgow

Actually the Newcastle section of Genuki has some really interesting information.

Amongst other things - a letter from a Census Enumerator was found with the 1861 census.
The transcribed version is included on Genuki

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/NBL/Newcastle/conditions

Gives a really good idea of the conditions -- the work the enumerator did -- and his payment.

The Newcastle section as a whole contains so much information and is really worth having a browse.

An interesting report, Pennines.
And good to know that on Tyneside even at that time there was compassion for those who had to work hard for a living.
We've just moved back to Gateshead, just up the hill from the worst effects of the fire.
(Though my roots are a bit further north - Blyth.)

Fantastic  part of England Tricia. I don't hail from there, but love it.

I could listen to the accents all day (well perhaps not ALL day!)
I recently did some research for a friend -- it took us through Tweedmouth, Spittal, Berwick, Jarrow, Morpeth. I did a lot of research on the history of the various places and it was SO fascinating - I learnt so much.

I realise I'm going off topic so I'll shut up -- but having been to Northumberland I know just how lovely it is.
