Can anyone find Bertie Parker (b Abingdon 1884) after 1891?
« on: Friday 29 June 18 13:45 BST (UK) »
Bertie Parker was the illegitimate son of Annie Parker, who was herself the illegitimate daughter of Mary Ann Parker.
In 1891 census Bertie, his mother and younger brother Henry Parker are with Richard Eltham, Mary Ann Eltham (nee Parker) and Alice Eltham (Richard and Mary Ann's daughter.

In 1901, Richard and Mary Ann are living with daughter Alice and her husband William Harding in Oxford. But no sign of Bertie and his mother Annie. Henry Parker was buried on 30 Jun 1891.

The only other thing I have is a newspaper report from Faringdon Advertiser and Vale of the White Horse Gazette 27 June 1891, that mentions that he was found begging on 3rd June and it was intended he should be sent to an Industrial School.

Have you looked for a marriage for his mother between 1891-1901?  Is he on the 1901 under her married name?

Freebmd has 2 x Annie Parker marriages in Berks in 1895  There is also an Ann Parker marriage in 1894 in Faringdon

Hi,

A Bertie Parker aged 7 and an L K Parker (male) aged 9 departed Liverpool 7.11.1891 for Portland aboard the Sardinian

The above Bertie Parker was a 'British Home Child' one of a party of 40 boys sent out by 'Barnardo Homes', also known as Dr Barnardo's Homes.. They departed from Liverpool as above to Portland, Maine, USA before entering Canada via Montreal on the way to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Link to the record here: http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/immigration/immigration-records/home-children-1869-1930/immigration-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=98824

Further info here about two further records for Bertie in issues of a magazine (published by the Canadian Branch of Dr Barnardo's Homes) in 1897 & 1900 here: http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/immigration/immigration-records/home-children-1869-1930/immigration-records/Pages/list.aspx?Surname=Parker&GivenName=Bertie&

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

Hi

The 1897 record here: http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/immigration/immigration-records/home-children-1869-1930/immigration-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=196547 shows an address of 'Tilbury Centre, Kent, Ontario' & that Bertie arrived in Canada in March 1892.

Original of the 1897 record here: https://canadianbritishhomechildren.weebly.com/ups-and-down-1897---1898.html scroll down to the second page & Bertie is in the right hand column.

The 1900 record here: http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/immigration/immigration-records/home-children-1869-1930/immigration-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=216324

Original of the 1900 here: https://canadianbritishhomechildren.weebly.com/ups-and-downs-1899---1900.html scroll to  the bottom of the page & the 1900 editions are there. Unfortunately, there don't appear to be any page numbers & I haven't managed to locate the entry for Bertie as yet!

Website for Canadian British Home Children here: https://canadianbritishhomechildren.weebly.com/

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

Have you checked those marriages against the 1901 census?

The other possible bride is also called Annie (Annie Maria Bosher) so I'm not sure I have the right one in 1901.
I can find William Evans and wife Annie in Ock Street Abingdon. Age is only a year out. The only Edward Cheer I can find is listed as E Cheer a patient in Fairmile Hospital he is married (not widower) He died there later in 1901 and was buried on 26 Sept 1901 age 38. I can't find a married Annie Cheer of similar age in Abingdon or nearby in 1901. I can't find an Annie Bosher in 1891 either in Abingdon or nearby, so unable to check her age.
