Darenzy (Derenzy, Derinzey, De Renzi, etc)
« on: Sunday 01 July 18 01:14 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I believe my 2 x great grandmother was Ann Darenzy (various) who may have been from Dublin and likely married a James Holohan there in 1840. I have been told that the name (and therefore family) likely originated from Sir Matthew De Renzi who settled in Offaly in the 1600s and that there were De Renzis who were well placed within society.

Not so my Ann! She married a labourer and probably lived in relatively poor circumstances in Bagnelstown, Carlow. I would love to know anything at all about the 'other side' of the De Renzi family especially those in Dublin. I would love to know more about Ann and I would be thrilled to hear from anyone who may have De Renzi ancestors (or is one currently!)

During my visit to Ireland last year (from Oz) I was told a number of times that the surname was not Irish although I'm sure by Ann's time the family well and truly considered themselves so. TIA.

Hi

There were also lots of Derenzy folk in nearby Co. Wexford, particularly around Bunclody (formerly known as Newtownbarry).   See link:-

Thanks LH and hallmark. Co. Wexford comes up quite a bit in my research on the Derenzys but can't yet find a connection for Ann with this county. I haven't seen that inscription - very interesting indeed. An interesting family and I'm completely fascinated in understanding how I'm connected with it. So more Wexford research it is!

Could De Ricci be another variation, there are a couple of records in Dublin COI

Quite a few for other variations

Keep playing around with the spelling.

Why not start with last known FACT  ??

Shemay not have been from Dublin and  may not  married  a James Holohan.....

Hi again

You write on another county that you know the name(s) of children and when they were baptised.

What religion were the children baptised?

Have you seen their baptism records?

Cheers

OK - last known fact. Baptismal records for Dunleckney parish showing Thomas and his siblings. Parents James Oolahan/Holohan/various and Ann Darenzy/various. The children were baptised RC. Yes I have seen the baptismal registers and have two records sourced by a cousin from the parish that detail the baptismal entries for Thomas and Michael (cousin ordered them quite a few years back). I have copies of Thomas' army papers (enlistment) with more details and which support place of birth, date, etc.

No Ann may not have been from Dublin. The evidence thus far weighs very favourably on the side of her being married to a James Holohan (see above). The only marriage record any member of our family can find is one James Holohan and Ann Darenzy in 1840 in Dublin. Fits with the birth of their first child. It seems at least a place to start searching for more information on her. Similarly Ann Derenzy as a name comes up in other records in the area e.g as a godparent. This was after Ann was married but perhaps it is her?

Yes I will keep playing around with the spelling. Certainly haven't tried De Ricci!

Thanks for the help and prompts :)
