CAPTAIN EDWARD MAUDSLEY HOCKLY 1921-???? Cunnard Shipping Line
« on: Sunday 01 July 18 06:22 BST (UK) »
My ??Great-GrandfatherEdward Maudsley Hockly, was the Master on HMS China, from Liverpool to New York in around July 1869,  but due to being ill he stayed in America while the First Officer commanded the ship on the return voyage to Liverpool. The First Officer received a note from him stating that he was in Buffallo. Nothing has been heard as to the whereabouts of Edward since. His death doesn't appear in any records back in England either! A newspaper article in Liverpool Mercury in January 25th 1870, Pg7 (Col b) regarding Southport (U.K.) Court Petty Sessions, his 2nd wife whom he married in 1864 states that on his arrival in New York he sent her a note, but she has heard nothing from him since. The article also states that information has been received which showed that the Captain had gone away with a lady, but not what information. Please assist me to find him

Confirming what Cathy found . . . . .

FreeBMD 1917 Jun Hawarden 11b 305 Hockly Edward M
However, it states that he was 68yo neabibg birth around 1849

Therefore all the dates do not fit.
Are we talking about the same person?

Why "1921-?" in the thread title?

He appears to have had a wife Jemima who was living at the correct address in 1911.
Liverpool Daily Post 1st March 1941 under heading "Death of Birkenhead Woman Centenarian"
Jemima Hockly from Ireland
" married life resident at Elm House, Higher Bebington"
"husband   L (?) Hockly, a ships Captain who died in the last war and was well known in shipping circle on Merseyside".
