he went on to marry Rosina riding and they have a son in the 1911 census, Bernard but there is no birth cert etc for him

This isn't correct.

Hello
Have researched families and often the mother or father changes their names due to circumstances such as remarriage (women)   lawlessness,  bigamy, deserting from the forces ect (Men)

You say he died in 1985 in Cardiff - I can't see a record of this.
There is one in 1982 in south glamorgan with unknown date of birth - how sure are you this is YOUR Alexander Truelove

And where is this date of birth from 21/8/1915?

The one with the matching Date of birth on the 1939 register is in Birmingham but doesn't give a middle initial

I wonder if he was born abroad

What was his occupation on his marriage certificate? Does it match the 1939 register (and the death certificate)?

Weird, can’t find a death record on FindMyPast or Ancestry 🤔

Neither could I but probate was there - weird

The only thing I can think of is it's the death in South Glamorgan (Date of birth unknown) the year after - but why it wasn't registered for nearly a year is beyond me
