According to Black (The Surnames of Scotland), it is a form of Don. He gives it as an Aberdeenshire name and gives some examples.

German: habitational name from Daun, a place in the Eifel region. Scottish (Aberdeenshire): variant of Don.

A large number of church & statutory records for the name in Aberdeenshire on Scotland's People.
