Licensed Victualler - LIGHTFOOT (Garston, Widnes, St. Helens, Parr)
« on: Tuesday 03 July 18 16:33 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm wondering how to go about learning more about a licensed victualler by the name of John James LIGHTFOOT (1867 - 1917).

I believe he was the landlord of a pub in Widnes - The Ram's Head. Two different pubs in Parr, St. Helens - The Queen's Arms and The Engine Inn. And also worked in pub(s) in Garston.

I'd also like to pinpoint the location of The Ram's Head in Widnes. It's safe to say it doesn't exist now but where exactly was it and do any images survive? It could have been on or near Sutton's Lane in Widnes but I'm not sure.

Any help / advice much appreciated.

Best Wishes,

Rowan Tree  :)

The Ram's Head was in Sutton's Lane and can be seen on this 1958 map https://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html#/Map/351624/385041/13/101329

Stan,

Wondering if I could pick your brain. I was looking at a 1895 trade directory and read the following;

Ram's Head, John James Lightfoot,
27 Caroline Street, Widnes

Was there more than one Ram's Head?
Did the Ram's Head move premises?
Did the street names change as I've found reference to the Ram's Head being on both Sutton's Lane and Caroline Street.

And apologies for overlooking the date of the map in your original post.

The Ram's Head was at the corner of Caroline Street and Sutton's Lane. I have found that it is named on this partial 1890 Town Plan map https://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html#/Map/351606/385121/13/100904

I have put the marker on the map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html#/Map/351610/385117/13/101329 that I posted before. I should have said that you have to change the zoom level with the - in the top left corner.

Stan, that's incredibly helpful - thank you.

Now I understand why the address seems to move. Excellent  :D

Just to say that the building is not marked as a Public House on the 1937 map.
