Robert MCMICHAEL
« on: Friday 06 July 18 06:01 BST (UK) »
I really don't know if he came from Antrim, but of all the N. Ireland counties, there were tons more McMichaels in the Griffith's Valuation in Antrim than in any other county, so I'm starting here.
My Robert MCMICHAEL was already in South Carolina before 1794. (My ggg-grandfather, John, who was not the eldest in his family by far, was born in SC in 1794.) His wife was Margaret Unknown.

Anyone out there also researching McMichaels?

Just because there are lots of McMichaels in County Antrim doesn't really mean that your family came from there. Best to start by going through all possible U.S. records for the family- this includes tracing each branch of the family to see if there's any clue to where in Ireland the family might have come from.

If you do get a more exact location (parish if not actual townland) then you can see what records might be available but unfortunately when you get back into the 1700s few records survive and it is extremely difficult.

You'll also nee to look at spelling variations such as Mcmighael, Michael, Mighael, Michell, etc. when searching through old records.

Do you know the names of all Robert & Margaret McMichael's children? (in birth order if possible) there could be clues there.

Thank you for the reply!  :)
I hadn't thought of those spelling variations at all. Unfortunately, We (my aunt who started researching this line almost 40 years ago, and I) barely know anything about Robert and Margaret - definitely nothing about siblings...
As for their children, yes, we do know all of their names and birth order... You know, I've heard over and over about the naming rules, but have only found them to apply to one out of five Irish and Scots Irish lines I'm researching; at least it hasn't helped at all. I wonder in some instances if infant deaths have changed the family dynamic and thrown off the order...
Thank you again for the advice; I will take another look at the children...

When I mentioned names of the family I wasn't thinking of traditional Ulster naming pattern but the actual names as children, especially the older ones, were usually called after someone in the family or area.

Seeing you had Antrim as the most populated Couuty for McMichael in Griffiths record about 1860’s for that part of Ireland
a quick biased glimpse would be to look at Hearth Money Roll in the 1660s  http://www.billmacafee.com where the Bill has wonderful spreadsheets showing the name as written at the time and how nowdays the author feels it is more likely to be represented.
