Mrs Boucher - Mystery disappearance
« on: Saturday 07 July 18 13:42 BST (UK) »
I have been trying to help a friend unravel a family mystery some 90 years old.

Her 2 x great uncle was:

Albert Boucher born Sheffield 1912, Died Gloucester 1995.

His first wife (name unknown) popped out to the corner shop one day, still in her pinny, and was never seen again.  She took nothing with her.   The usual searches and publicity took place but with no joy.  I understand that the couple had a daughter (who may still be living).

Albert went on to marry again in 1939 and had 2 sons. (Its possible that the sons are still living.)

The family lost touch and the above story has been passed down through the family.

I have searched as well as other family members and can find no trace of Mrs No 1 and their daughter who I believe more than likely was reared by her father.

I am wondering if in fact they were every married at all.   In order to remarry I believe that Albert would probably have to have had his first wife declared dead after missing for 7 years.... so she would have had to have gone missing in 1932 when Albert was 20.   Would a death certificate or similar be issued.?

Can anyone come up with any ideas of where to look?

Many thanks
Ginger

I can't find Albert's marriage registration for 1939.
Where did it take place?

was it here?    Jan-Feb-Mar 1939  Gloucester?

Does he declared himself widower or single on there?

I can see only his missus and a newborn at 17 Twyner st , which matches up with the electoral roll.

Hi

2nd Marriage in Sheffield to Alma Stafford (1914 to 2010) in Sept 1939.  Don't know how he describes himself on cert.  I've looked for Parish records but nothing.
Thank you for your speedy response.

On FreeBMD I've found marriages for Albert in the Sheffield area in Dec qtr 1933 (Ecclesall Bierlow) and Sep qtr 1939 (Sheffield).

The first marriage appears to have produced a daughter, and the second one twin boys.

No names given here as they're found easily enough, and any of the children might still be alive.

I haven't seen anything definite on what happened to his first wife, though there are a few marriage and death entries with the right name. It might be necessary to get a copy of the 1933 marriage certificate to get some idea of when she was born, then it might be possible to tie her to more recent events.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Thanks for that Arthur.  I am sure you have found some answers for us.   I'll have a look myself. I never seem to use free BMD - so there's a lesson learnt there!

UK/Ireland Obituary Index on Ancestry has death for Alma in 2010. Obituary appeared in The Gloucestershire. The daughter from the first marriage and one son from the second are referred to as being her children.

That's interesting, I wondered if the Gloucester connection (Albert's death) was right.  Thanks for that.

Hi

It looks like the first marriage was in 1933 and they had a daughter in 1934 who was married in Sheffield in 1956, so looks like they stopped in Sheffield area. could try electoral rolls to see if she is mentioned?

Alma Boucher born 1914 in 1939 register. She is down as married & a picture house usherette, no husband or children living with her.

I think the first wife could have been born either 1908/1910/1915. I think the 1915 married in 1936. Could have divorced it seems you would have to get the certificate to find the age & parents details.

Hi.

Thanks John.

I think its strange that there's no record of a death, burial or divorce prior to Albert marrying Alma,  1 of the three had to happen so he could marry legally. Also I've had a look in newspaper archives to see if the disappearance was in the papers … nothing.
