GRO PDF trial - good news!
« on: Saturday 07 July 18 19:55 BST (UK) »
Noticed this today on GRO website:

'GRO has been piloting a service providing PDF copies of historical birth and death records. The pilot, originally extended to July 2018, has now been extended further to continue to assess longer term demand and there is no planned end date at this time. Further communications will be provided in due course.'

So they're a step closer to making this service permanent ;D

Yes, I noticed that in 'The Guardian' recently.

Marriages will not be added any time soon, as they were not scanned as part of the  DOVE and MAGPIE projects before they came to an untimely end.

I would have thought that the best way of handling older BMD certificates would be to release them free to the public but with no cost to the government. Charging for 1837 documents is unacceptable.

Is it 'unacceptable' for TNA to charge for even older documents?  What about county archives?  They're all publicly funded too.

Thanks Lisa, it's always good to share positive news :)

If we all give GRO 'feedback' as requested when our PDFs arrive, tell them they're wonderful (which they usually are), and ask for more recent records including marriages, the power of RootsChat might just prevail ;D

But someone would have to pick up the cost ie the taxpayer.  They still have to employ staff to locate and produce these certificates   ::)   Why should the taxpayer pay for our 'hobby'
