Rush Green ?near Wittersham Kent
« on: Saturday 07 July 18 21:34 BST (UK) »
There is a baptism entry transcribed on the Freereg site for Wittersham, St John the Baptist, for an ancestor of my partner bap. 3rd April 1796. There is a very helpful note made by the vicar at the time. Can anyone help with the exact position of Rush Green ?
"The parents of the above were travellers. He was born upon Rush Green. They were married as appeared by a certificate at Otham by William Horne the rector 1794. The father said he belonged to Erith."
I have found two transcripts of the marriage at Otham  to a May Len or alternatively Mary Lew and I understand the Erith registers were burnt . So it looks like I have come to a dead end .
So any help about Rush Green and whether it was a traditional travellers site would be most welcome.

Thank you for the map. Does anyone know in what sense "upon" is being used here ?    Is it used as meaning "on" or possibly "near" ? I don't know anything about Kent vernacular. There doesn't seem to be an actual Rush Green nearby on which he could have been born! ?

Yes thank you for this information. I had previously got quite enthusiastic about this area but decided in the end that it was just a coincidence of name. My partner's ancestor travelled around the Kent Sussex border, using the information derived from the various birth places of his children, so I have gone back to searching the Wittersham area. Later on the surviving children did move to the Maidstone area but this was around 1850. Thanks again for your help.
