Burial Records St James Parish 1840

Hi. I am looking to find a; the cause of death and b; the burial place for a convict named Nathaniel Ashurst. I have his crime, sentence 7 years deportaion, date of departure from England July 1839, ships name Barossa, date of arrival in Sydney Dec 1839, his death date Feb 8th 1840, but not his cause of death and exact burial place. I have records of his death and burial down as Sydney General Hospital Feb 8th 1840, Burial in the Parish of St James in the County of Cumberland. Would like to narrow this info down if possible. Can anyone help? thanks.

Welcome to RootsChat and to the Australia Board.

Civil Registration for BDMs did not start in NSW until 1856.  Prior to that there's Early Church Records, so baptisms, weddings, burials.

I will have a good look through my offline NSW resources to see what I have on your chap.   St James, Cumberland ... Could refer to the Civil Parish of St James in the County of Cumberland, ... is this info from familysearch.org?

Hi, thanks for your quick response. No the records I have are from the Queensland State Library. It doesn't say 'civil' just the heading words "Burials in the Parish of St James in the County of Cumberland" ceremony was performed by a priest named William Horatio Walsh.

I see from NSW Archives that also from same ship, a David AGG died Sydney Hospital 3 Feb 1840, aged 26.   I wonder if there were others...  Here's live link to Convict Index.

Devonshire Street Cemetery was probably the cemetery, but it closed for the construction of Central Railway and many were transferred to other cemeteries..

Joseph MALPAS aged 53 died 3 Jan 1840, Sydney Hospital (so likely disembarked and straight to hospital)

Samuel NASH, aged 22, died 15 Jan 1840, Sydney Hospital

Quite a few... when you have the index up, click on the heading Vessel and select Barossa, and also click on 'Record type' and select Convict Death Register...

http://www.hawkesbury.net.au/claimaconvict/convictDetails.php?convictId=40149   There's likely someone else also researching same chap.   He has burial as 10 Feb 1840, so I suggest he has copy of the burial register, which should give name of cemetery.

That link to 'Claim a Convict' is me. I have claimed Nathaniel and I put up the info as I find it. Just trying to find the last 2 pieces of the story. Cause of death and actual burial place, if possible.

 and in April 1839 licensed to the new parish of St Laurence. He was priested by Bishop William Grant Broughton at St James's Church on 22 September.
Services had been held in St Laurence's parish since 1838, in the store-room of a brewery in Elizabeth Street. Walsh immediately began to organize his large and unformed parish, and had rapid and substantial success. Bishop Broughton laid the foundation stone of Christ Church on 1 January 1840 and consecrated it in September 1845. Walsh made it one of the principal churches in the diocese.

Christ Church St Laurence, Rev Walsh conducted burial … the closest cemetery to Christ Church St Laurence … Devonshire St Cemetery.    http://ccsl.org.au/archives-history/   The map on that live link shows you where the Church is (and that’s where it was initially too) and there’s the railway lines converging under the marker there…   

Perhaps you could consider emailing the Archivist at St Laurence and ask if they have spare moment to look up their burial register for your chap …
