'RM' Abbreviation?
« on: Sunday 08 July 18 13:55 BST (UK) »
I was looking at a marriage register yesterday and the groom's occupation was abbreviated to RM. What could RM be? I was thinking Royal Marine? His brother, who was a witness, is listed as sailor on his marriage register from a few years earlier.

I would also think it could be Royal Marine.  Have you tried looking for service records or is the marriage fairly recent ie last 100 years

1925 wedding so if there is a service record it'll still be with the MOD.

Coming from a town that had a Royal Marine Barracks, all entries of Baptisms and Marriages, where the occupation was required, R.M. was very common and stood for Royal Marine. Sometimes written in full - it depended on the diligence of the clergyman writing it down.
