Tracing the Shippen family
« on: Sunday 08 July 18 15:54 BST (UK) »
I am struggling to get further back than my 5x great grandfather George (Georgii) Shippen. He was born in the Durham registration area - possibly Medomsley on 27th February 1768.

I have a suspicion that his ancestors came from the Leeds / Barwick / Sherborne in Elmet area but cannot trace a link. There were Shippens in this area who were catholic recusants and family in the Durham/Tyneside area were also catholic until modern times.

Can anybody help?

Barry

Welcome to Rootschat Barry.

I am a little confused. There were no reg districts in 1768. Civil Reg of B/M/D didnt start until Sept 1837.
Did you mean he was born 1868?

Trish :)

Ok, found christenings of his and Sares children so sorry I queried your date.

What are the Parents names on the 27th February 1768 record you have?

So is this your Georges Marriage?:
George SHIPPON to Sarah REED 14 Jun 1784, St Mary Magdalene, Medomsley

FreeREG has these Marriages;
John SHIPPEN/Addie FAIRLAM 5 Jul 1762 Ebchester
John SHIPPEN/Ann JOYCE 27 May 1765 Ryton

Coincidentally there is a ADDEY Shippen/John SUCH Marriage 27 May 1765 Medomsley.
It does not say she is widowed though.

I cant confirm that Baptism/Christening date for George that Trees seem to have with no Parents named.

Maybe someone else can?

This may be George in 1841 Census with Son and his Wife;

1841 Census
St Andrews Bywell, Northumberland
George Shippen, 50, Farmer
Isabella Shippen, 50
George Shippen, 80
2 Georges NOT born in County, Isabella is.

St Andrew, Bywell, Northumberland;
Marriage; 12 May 1823, George SHIPPON/Isabella BELL
Burial; GEORGE Shippen 11 Jun 1842 age 84*****

GRO has his Death Reg as age 87 so a bit of confusion there.

On Anc;
Name: George Shippen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 22 Feb 1787
Birth Place: Stella, Northumberland, England
Father: George Shippen
Mother: Sarah Reed

This marriage shows George as 'of the parish of Ryt'  (Ryton)

I can't see any evidence of that baptism shown on 'trees' either

Have you checked the sponsors names on the baptisms of their children to see if there might be a connection with possible parent/s or possible sibling/s names?

Was Thomas their first child?

Son Thomas Shippen born 5 Mar 1785 to Georgii Shippen & Sara Shippen nee Reed

baptism on 11 March 1785 has sponsors Joannes & Barbara Shippen

England & Wales, Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Registers, 1567-1970
Piece 0352: Ryton, St Thomas Aquino Chapel, Stella (Catholic), 1775-1838 -

added

Georgii bp 1787 sponsors Joannes Chorley & Sara SHIPPEN Senior

Hello

Sherburn in Elmet is about 7 miles West of Selby.

Some Shippen at Wistow near Selby ...

(Reply #1)

"Thank you Claire for noticing that Joseph Tate married Mary Shippen in 1776 at Wistow. I agree John Hood's neighbour was possibly Shippen at Selby, not M. Slipper / Mrs Slipper.

Your Benjamin Johnson married Mary Shippen 1762, at Wistow example, shows how easily it could look like Slipper at a glance.

Joseph Tate of Wistow, Yeoman, was one of the parties (along with John Turner and Others, see above) involved in the same 1790 transfer of a House divided into 2 Tenements etc., at Selby, to John Spencer of Selby, Grocer.

This John Turner of Selby was a Tallow Chandler, Grocer and later a Book Keeper.
"

This John Turner, appears to be linked to the local Presbyterian Chapel (comparing the John Turner entries in the Selby Land Tax of 1789 & 1790) and John Turner's Occupier might possibly be Shippen and not Slipper, as thought.

Regarding the York Wills, only part of them are online. Because only the flat packed Yorkshire Wills were scanned, but those in Bundles were not.

Sorry if this is a broad reply to you all. Just finding my way about this site and feeling rather overwhelmed by the speed of responses.

The Georgii Shippen I am stuck on is recorded as baptised in Durham 27th Feb 1768 with no specific place that I can find. He married Sare (sic) Reed on the 14th June 1784. Their eldest son Thomas was born 5th March 1785 and baptised 11th March at St Thomas Aquino (RC) church Stella Nr Ryton.

He was followed by twins? George and John 27 February 1787, Ann 14 December 1789, two Stevens 1793 and 1794 the first one having died as an infant. Then came John  28 March 1799 and finally in my research Anthony 15 May 1804. All born/registered in Stella.

I was told by a catholic priest in Ryton that the current church is much more recent than these dates and that worship took place in local 'Great Houses'. Records seem hard to find

Going by Georges Burial on FreeREG he was born c 1758 or by GRO 1755.

So older than born 1768 as Trees show.

Also if born 1768 he would only be 16 in 1784 when married, not impossible but unlikely.
