John Irwin Thoms
« on: Sunday 08 July 18 20:34 BST (UK) »
John Irwin Thoms lived in Melbourne from at least 1876 (when his son Herbert Thoms was born) until his death in 1897. John was married to Elizabeth Mary Wilson who died in Melbourne in 1903, aged 52. Does anyone know if John and Elizabeth were born in England, and when?

Hi Andro93,

You can purchase a digital image of Herbert's birth certificate here https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/indexsearch.doj for $24.50.

This should give fathers name, age, place of birth, occupation, age when married, any other siblings as well as mothers name and age and place of birth.

John Irwin THOMS died in Perth WA in 1897, death notice here (in case you don't have it)
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article190654833

WA death certificates from 1896 state place of birth (if known), and according to the index, his place of birth is "Prstnps Sc", but I'm not really sure what that is! Perhaps somewhere in Scotland?
http://www.bdm.dotag.wa.gov.au/_apps/pioneersindex/

You could also purchase his death cert to find out.

Modified to add:
It's indexed as John Irwin THOMAS, aged 54, parents unknown, reg no 1936

John Irwin Thoms lived in Melbourne from at least 1876 (when his son Herbert Thoms was born)

There is an appearance of John Irwin THOMS in March 1870 when he was charged on a summons with false pretenses (the case was dismissed)

Modified to add:
You can see the 9 children born to John Irwin THOMS and Elizabeth on the Vic BDM search - the earliest being Louisa Jessie in 1868. John and Elizabeth were married in Vic in 1867 (reg no 4217)
https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/indexsearch.doj

Their marriage cert should also show their place of birth.  ;)

I did wonder why he was in Western Australia, however his son was married in Perth on 6th April 1897, so I thought he may have just been there for the wedding? (John Irwin THOMS died on 16th May 1897 at Perth.)
