What was Joseph Hunt’s wife maiden name?
« on: Monday 09 July 18 18:29 BST (UK) »
I’ve put this in the common room as there are a few different places involved.

In 1871, Joseph Hunt an annuitant aged 54,born Devon, is with wife Harriet, 41, born Gloucester, in St James Clerkenwell.
RG10/383/49/13
There’s also a daughter, Josephine J, born approx 1855 in Malta

I’ve not been able to find a marriage for Joseph and a Harriet, and am unsure if records would exist for births of British people in Malta.
Josephine is consistent in 1881 and 1891 Census with age and place of birth. She marries a Henry Scrymgeour in 1872 and divorces him in 1893, dying in 1897.

Joseph may be in Plymouth in 1851, a corporal in the army
H0107/1859/898/2.

I am therefore wondering whether their marriage also took place in Malta.

Any help much appreciated

The 1851 for Joseph says unmarried so you could be right the marriage was abroad before the birth of Josephine in 1855.

The 1881 pins down the birthplaces further - South Moulton for Joseph and Cirencester for Harriet.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

I've not so far managed to track them down together in 1861

FindMyPast has the birth/baptism (image/transcription) -

Place - Malta
"Josephine Jane, daughter of Joseph ____**, Sgt in the 4th King's ?, & of Christine his wife was born 5 January 1855 and baptised the 7th February 1855, by me William Hare (?), Chaplain to the Forces"

** - FindMyPast has transcribed the surname as "Stunt" - but looking at the original it could well be "Hunt"

Cannot spot an army record under the service number 1495 - presumably "lost" when 2/3rds of records were destroyed by fire in 1941 (air raid)

In 1865 the district was still East London - and it looks as if the pension had gone up to 1s 11d!

I think he may have started pension life in Exeter, June 61 before moving to East London.v
